Adventures in Kuala Lumpur Pt.1
First day in KL was spent sleeping.
Yeah, so I know that’s not the most productive way to spend our time, but by blimey did we need it!
A little walk around to catch some daylight (not to mention the rain – beware when you complain of how much it rains in the UK – it’s nothing compared to Malaysia!) took us into Bangsar Village and its corresponding shopping centre. Apart from shopping holding absolutely no appeal anymore (as previously documented) it really struck me just how similar these things (shopping centres) are anywhere.

The same could be said about the KLCC. The KLCC shopping centre sits at the bottom of the KL ‘Twin Towers’ – the Petronas towers which really are a fairly pretty sight as far as buildings go. But again, the shopping malls just remind you of how homogenised many tourist ‘attractions’ have become. It even has a large Marks and Spencers. How depressing.
Anyway, apart from that I’ve got my phone unlocked and now have a bona fide Malaysian number – surprisingly easy and surprisingly cheap. I know it’s not that exciting really but it makes me feel like I have actually left the U.K. and that I am traveling and moving on that little bit more. My UK number, which has been with me for 8 years, is now being disconnected. No point keeping a number on contract and paying for it that you won’t be using for over a year!
We’ve been down to one or two night markets and sampled some quality cheap food and the largest number of watch, sunglasses and belt/belt buckles stalls that I’ve ever seen in my life along with corresponding aggressive salesmen. Oh, and the pirated DVDs (it is actually very difficult to obtain legal media of any sort in Malaysia, including DVDs and video games).
But the food is great and cheap – great plus point. The beer, being a Muslim country, is expensive and not a great deal cheaper than back home in London – great MINUS point! At least I should lose weight. Perhaps!
